Frequently asked questions
General
Great question, and honestly, it depends on your goals. If you're running a casual neighborhood fun run where finishing order doesn't matter, you might be fine with a stopwatch and a volunteer. But here's what most event directors tell us after they've timed their first event properly: participants notice, and they come back.
Accurate results, even for a small jog-a-thon or charity 5K, add a level of legitimacy and excitement that changes the feel of the whole event. Finishers get a real time they can be proud of. Age group winners are recognized fairly. And you're not stuck trying to manually record 200 people crossing a finish line while also managing volunteers, sponsors, and a timing malfunction on a spreadsheet.
We work with events of all sizes and budgets, and part of what we do is help you figure out what level of timing and support actually makes sense for your event. Sometimes that's the full package. Sometimes it's something leaner. Either way, we'll be straight with you — and if we think you don't need us, we'll tell you that too.
Pretty much everything! We time all types of running and endurance events: 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons, full marathons, ultra-marathons, triathlons, and cycling events. But we also love the fun stuff: jog-a-thons, charity fun runs, conference runs, and community events of all shapes and sizes. If people are moving and you need to track it, we've got you covered.
We're based in San Diego and primarily serve the western United States, but our reach goes well beyond that. We've timed events across the US, in Mexico, and internationally, including events in Brighton, England. Wherever your event is, let's talk.
We use MyLaps bib tag timing systems, the same technology trusted at the Boston Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Amsterdam Marathon, and hundreds of other major events worldwide. MyLaps uses a lightweight, disposable RFID chip that attaches right to a participant's race bib. No buttons to push, no wristbands to fumble with. It just works. Accurate, reliable, and seamless for your participants.
We're a lot more than just a clock at the finish line. We're your full event partner. Depending on what you need, we can help with:
• Race logistics and planning
• Bib tagging and management
• Onsite registration assistance
• Split points and course timing
• Staffing
• Live results and mobile tracking
• Course permitting
• Medal and t-shirt procurement
• Brainstorming and strategy to make your event the best it can be
Whether you need us for timing only or want us involved from day one, we flex to fit what your event needs.
It depends on your event. Price is based on size, distance, number of timing points, and which services you need. The best way to get a real number is to reach out and tell us about your event. We'll put together a custom quote quickly and we're happy to work within your budget.
We recommend locking in your timing company 6-9 months out, especially for spring and fall race seasons, as those dates fill up fast. That said, don't be shy if you're working on a tighter timeline. We do our best to accommodate and we'll always be upfront about availability.
Absolutely. We've timed everything from small community jog-a-thons to U.S. National Championship triathlons. Every event gets the same care and attention. We don't cut corners regardless of size. Your participants deserve accurate results whether there are 50 of them or 5,000.
Easy. Just fill out the quote form on our website, shoot us an email at info@timinghq.com,(mailto:info@timinghq.com) or give us a call at 619.784.6347. We'll get back to you within 24 hours. We love talking events, so don't hesitate to reach out even if you're still in the early planning stages.
